Conveying Problem Structure from an Algebraic Modeling Language to Optimization Algorithms

چکیده
Optimization algorithms can exploit problem structures of various kinds, such as sparsity of derivatives, complementarity conditions, block structure, stochasticity, priorities for discrete variables, and information about piecewiselinear terms. Moreover, some algorithms deduce additional structural information that may help the modeler. We review and discuss some ways of conveying structure, with examples from our designs for the AMPL modeling language. We show in particular how Òdeclared suffixesÓ provide a new and useful way to express structure and acquire solution information.

Numerical Issues and Influences in the Design of Algebraic Modeling Languages for Optimization
The idea of a modeling language is to describe mathematical problems symbolically in a way that is familiar to people but that allows for processing by computer systems. In particular the concept of an algebraic modeling language, based on objective and constraint expressions in terms of decision variables, has proved to be valuable for a broad range of optimization and related problems. One mo...
متن کاملA structure-conveying modelling language for mathematical and stochastic programming
We present a structure-conveying algebraic modelling language for mathematical programming. The proposed language extends AMPL with object-oriented features that allows the user to construct models from sub-models, and is implemented as a combination of preand post-processing phases for AMPL. Unlike traditional modelling languages, the new approach does not scramble the block structure of the p...
متن کاملExtending an Algebraic Modeling Language to Support Constraint Programming
Although algebraic modeling languages are widely used in linear and nonlinear programming applications, their use for combinatorial or discrete optimization has largely been limited to developing integer linear programming models for solution by general-purpose branch-and-bound procedures. Yet much of a modeling language’s underlying structure for expressing integer programs is equally useful f...
متن کاملBi-objective optimization of multi-server intermodal hub-location-allocation problem in congested systems: modeling and solution
A new multi-objective intermodal hub-location-allocation problem is modeled in this paper in which both the origin and the destination hub facilities are modeled as an M/M/m queuing system. The problem is being formulated as a constrained bi-objective optimization model to minimize the total costs as well as minimizing the total system time. A small-size problem is solved on the GAMS software t...
متن کاملExtending a General-purpose Algebraic Modeling Language to Combinatorial Optimization: a Logic Programming Approach
General-purpose algebraic modeling languages are a central feature of popular computer systems for large-scale optimization. Languages such as AIMMS [2], AMPL [12, 13], GAMS [4, 5], LINGO [23] and MPL [18] allow people to develop and maintain diverse optimization models in their natural mathematical forms. The systems that process these languages convert automatically to and from the various da...
